The project started on 1 January 2024 and runs until the end of 2027, with an EU contribution of about \u20ac6.2 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PINK: safety and sustainability by design<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The European Green Deal and the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability call for chemicals and materials that are safe and sustainable <em>from the very beginning<\/em> of their development. The Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD) framework proposed by the European Commission provides the reference, but putting it into practice is hard: data are scarce or fragmented in the early phases of innovation, assessments are expensive, and safety, sustainability, functionality and cost often pull in different directions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PINK addresses this gap with an <strong>open, computational innovation platform<\/strong> that supports industry, and SMEs in particular, in embedding SSbD assessment directly into the development cycle of advanced materials and chemicals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Digitalisation, modelling and AI working together<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Modelling and simulation<\/strong> to fill data gaps along the life cycle and the value chain, from the properties of the material to its safety and environmental profile, using a tiered approach: fast, high-throughput methods in the early phases, more accurate and demanding methods as the material matures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Digitalisation and interoperability<\/strong>: microservices, APIs and ontologies ensure technical and semantic interoperability, so that models, data and tools from different partners can be combined into reproducible workflows and exchanged following FAIR principles, with documented data provenance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Artificial intelligence<\/strong>, including generative AI, to support decision-making: the <strong>PINKISH platform<\/strong> will combine decision-support workflows, data visualisation and AI-based assistance to help developers balance functionality, cost-efficiency, safety and sustainability through multi-objective optimisation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Knowledge infrastructure<\/strong>: a PINK Registry and a Knowledge Base, together with a knowledge graph for chemical impact assessment, will make the knowledge generated in the project findable, linked and reusable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/daimoners.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/pink-framework.png\" alt=\"PINK concept: multi-objective decision support based on generative AI, integrating functionality, safety and sustainability along the material life cycle and value chain\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1;width:119px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The PINK concept: read-across and an increasing amount of information from earlier development stages feed a multi-objective, generative-AI-based decision support system that balances functionality, safety and sustainability. Image: PINK project.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The contribution of DAIMON<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Digital technologies and AI for sustainable innovation are at the core of the DAIMON activities. In PINK, the team contributes with <strong>multiscale computational workflows<\/strong> that connect atomistic and mesoscale simulations with process-level models, aiming to predict material properties and process behaviour <em>in silico<\/em> and to feed SSbD assessment with computed data, reducing the dependence on costly experiments and on scarce industrial data. The workflows are designed to be orchestrated, reproducible and semantically annotated, so that every result can be traced back to the models, inputs and assumptions that generated it, and reused in the PINKISH platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These activities build on the expertise of the group in multiscale modelling, workflow automation, data science and AI, and on its experience with FAIR data infrastructures and digital twins, bringing them to bear on one of the central challenges of the European industrial transition: making sustainability a design criterion that is computed, compared and optimised from the first stages of innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A consortium spanning research and industry<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PINK is coordinated by Seven Past Nine and brings together research institutes, universities, SMEs, one large industry and one industry association from across Europe: SINTEF, the Italian National Research Council (CNR), the National Technical University of Athens, NovaMechanics, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology, the University of Helsinki, the Karolinska Institutet, the University of Salzburg, BASF, the Innovative Advanced Materials Initiative (IAM-I), Leartiker, Valeo, Acumenist and other partners. The project will validate its approach on industrial case studies and will provide tools that companies can use to speed up the transition towards safer and more sustainable materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More information, news and results are available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/pink-project.eu\">PINK website<\/a>.
