Funded under the European Union\u2019s Horizon Europe programme, BIO-SUSHY brings together a multidisciplinary consortium committed to replacing harmful per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) with high-performance, bio-based alternatives designed according to the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework.<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BIO-SUSHY &#8211; <em>Sustainable Surface Protection by Glass-like Hybrid and Biomaterials Coatings<\/em> &#8211; is a 48-month Horizon Research and Innovation Action running from January 2023 to December 2026, with an EU contribution of approximately \u20ac4.8 million. Coordinated by Materia Nova, the project involves 15 partners across 8 countries, combining expertise from research institutions, SMEs, industry stakeholders, and academic partners to accelerate the development and market uptake of next-generation sustainable coatings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project addresses one of the most urgent environmental and industrial challenges in Europe: the widespread use of PFAS in coatings. Known as \u201cforever chemicals\u201d due to their extreme persistence in the environment, PFAS are commonly used because of their excellent water- and oil-repellent properties. However, their accumulation in ecosystems and the human body poses serious risks to health and sustainability. BIO-SUSHY aims to provide practical, high-performance alternatives that eliminate these hazardous substances while maintaining functionality and durability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To achieve this, BIO-SUSHY is developing three novel PFAS-free coating solutions targeting the textile, food packaging, and cosmetic packaging sectors. These coatings are based on bio-based thermoplastic powders and hybrid sol-gel technologies, combining hydrophobic and oleophobic performance with improved environmental compatibility. Applications include water-repellent textiles, grease-resistant food trays, and durable coatings for reusable cosmetic glass containers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A key distinguishing feature of BIO-SUSHY is the integration of the European Commission\u2019s SSbD framework from the earliest stages of material development. Rather than focusing only on replacing PFAS, the project evaluates the entire life cycle of the new coatings, including environmental impact, economic viability, and social implications. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Life Cycle Costing (LCC), and Social LCA (S-LCA) are used to ensure that the solutions are not only safer but also scalable, affordable, and aligned with circular economy principles. Preliminary assessments already indicate significant reductions in CO\u2082 emissions, toxicity, and fossil resource dependence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BIO-SUSHY also plays an active role in the broader European innovation ecosystem through collaborations such as the NO-PFAS Cluster, where it works alongside sister projects to accelerate knowledge exchange on PFAS-free materials, sustainability assessment, and industrial implementation. This collaborative approach strengthens Europe\u2019s capacity to deliver safer chemicals and sustainable materials at scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BIO-SUSHY represents a significant step forward in the European strategy for a toxic-free environment and the Green Deal objectives. By bridging advanced materials research, industrial deployment, and sustainability science, the project is helping industries move from hazardous legacy materials toward safer and more resilient solutions for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Within BIO-SUSHY, the DAIMON team plays a key role in advancing the project\u2019s digital and modelling dimension by leading activities on multiscale physics-based modelling and data integration. DAIMON is responsible for developing computational workflows that connect molecular- and mesoscale simulations with application-oriented performance indicators relevant to industrial targets. This includes the design and implementation of multiscale, data-driven workflows capable of linking material structure, surface properties, degradation mechanisms, and functional performance across different length and time scales.
